2nd September, plus a great card of supporting races. The first 400 patrons on course will receive the Trotman commentary for free.
Our Brahman Boy Takes Out Bankstown Cup Bankstowns best pacer Our Brahman Boy took the honors in the inaugural Bankstown Trotting Club Cup conducted in front of a great crowd on Saturday night. Prepared by Bankstowns Trainer of the year Ali Khouiss and perfectly handled by Blake Fitzpatrick, Our Brahman Boy led all the way and held out the determined challenges of Karloo Mick and Golden Goal in rating 2.2.7 and recording a swift 57.0 last half over the demanding 2540m journey. Local trainers were again to the fore at the Paceway with the John Palmer prepared Our Winsome Hanover looking good in his 13m victory at his first Australian start. Purchased through the Herbert Bloodstock Australia agency by local identity Ron Lloyd, the 5yo Badlands Hanover gelding rated a healthy 2.00.8 mile rate in downing Bluey Mahoney and Balmory. Another local to salute on the night was Mick Watkins when he bought favourite elect Royal Place with a well timed run in the 3yo pace to easily account for Cosmic Babe and In Top Class. With the first half being run in farcical 68.6, a number of runners that raced at the rear looked a little unlucky but in the next event there were no excuses for the beaten brigade when quality mare Vixen Hanover proved far too good when winning the Allied Express Mares Championship Final. Veteran trainer/driver Harry Martin was seen at his best when Rogers Reign led throughout later in the evening when well supported while leading driver Greg Bennett had to wait until the last race on the card to salute the judge, teaming with Mark Dent for Mighty Shogun`s easy victory. Mighty Shogun became the 5th favourite to score on the night when accounting for Drummossie and Anguish in a 2.2.7 mile rate. BENNETT EXTENDS LEAD Leading Freelance driver Greg Bennett had to wait until the last race at Bankstown on Monday to land another winner and extend his lead on the Drivers Premiership. Bennett was first out and first home with the Jack Primmer trained Rekindled Flame to give the Holmes Hanover mare her first lifetime win after being runner up in her previous 4 starts. Arch rival Blake Fitzpatrick stayed in touch with Bennett when he landed the Gary Henman trained Dorothys Daughter to a decisive victory earlier in the day. The ultra consistent Stature mare downed hot favourite Mighty Shogun and Big Black Machine in a roughly run affair with several runners suffering interference early when Wandin North went off stride. Local trainer/driver Mick Watkins looks to have a promising young pacer in Mighty Place after the 3yo son of Royal Chef bolted in, in the 3RO/R1 pace. Working hard early to find the top, Mighty Place easily accounted for a game Katies Passion with In Top Class debuting well for 3rd place. Gilead Trainer/Driver Jimmy Brown had a welcome change of luck when saluting with Hanconix in the next event rating a swift 2.00.7 over the 1740m. Rank outsider Northern Silver took 2nd place ahead of Guidy setting up a healthy trifecta dividend. Improved pacer Themorningrumble showed his liking for the Paceway in landing his 3rd successive win in the last 3 weeks when too good for Rambaldi and Cee Ceeaus. Next Monday’s meeting sees the running of heats of the Allied Express Mares Championship with the final of $8000+Gig to be decided on Carnival Of Cups night, Sept 30th. Good seats are still available in the restaurant for only $35 for a 3 course meal with all patrons enjoying a panoramic view of proceedings and drinks waiters for your convenience. BANKSTOWN WEATHERS THE STORM Despite over 7 inches of rain falling in the previous 72 hours, Bankstown Paceway held up well for last Mondays meeting. Patrons witnessed some good racing in spite of the conditions, including a slick 58.9 last 800m recorded in the fast class event of the day, taken out in fine style by local pacer Trouper Rama. Sent straight to the front by Ben Sarina for trainer Justin Tall, Trouper Rama showed a welcome return to form after suffering a few setbacks of late to easily account for Undertaker and Dallas Bromac, with favourite Black Line 14m astern in 5th place. Earlier in the day the formidable combination of Paul and Blake Fitzpatrick were in the winners circle again when Life Sign gelding Pure Life led throughout to take out the R0 pace downing the consistent mares Rekindled Flame and Dream Craft. In the first of several upsets on the day, Dying To Please narrowly held off another long shot in Snapper Adios in the first R1 event, with favourite Dorothys Daughter looking a little unlucky in 3rd place. Trainer/driver Paul Sapio chimed in with Tara Tiara scoring at almost 20/1 later in the day when a close victor over favourite elect Guidy with Rockshaw not far away taking 3rd. Leoni O`Grady gave the locals something to cheer when her big Safely Kept gelding Rambaldi romped in against the C1 pacers recording his 5th win in 18 race starts and taking his earnings over the $20,000 mark. Themorningrumble proved last weeks victory no fluke when winning again for trainer/driver Joel Pengilly in the C3/4 pace, and in the last race run in a downpour Live Or Die mare Labelle Delegzi missed some early trouble in accounting for Tears To Maple and an unlucky Anquish. Racing is again hosted at the Paceway next Monday with the following week seeing heats of the Allied Express Mares Championship run to decide the starters in the $8000+Gig final held on Carnival Of Cups Night, September 30th. KHOUISS TAKES OUT BANKSTOWN PACEWAY PREMIERSHIP Condell Park trainer Ali Khouiss had his best season at the Paceway taking out the 2006 Trainers Premiership after the last meeting was concluded on Monday. Khouiss has been steadily building up his team of late with several promising NZ imports and will be a force to be reckoned with in the new season. Ali Khouiss recently commissioned a website so that he can disseminate information to his many clients, supporters and friends. The website address is: http://www.khouissracingstables.com Greg Bennett was once again the leading Driver and continues to be one of Australia’s best freelance drivers. Glen McElhinney had a great day, his first winner was the Brett Cotterill trained Katies Passion when the daughter of USA sire Union Guy proved too strong in the 2yo event to record her first lifetime win. `Maca` then combined with Temora trainer Ray Walker to bring Netherby Prince home at the head of the field after some good bets were landed on the 5yo son of prolific sire Stature. Another driver seen with a large smile was Cameron Fitzpatrick when he also scored a double beginning when Taralinger made it three wins from her last four starts when outstaying her rivals earlier in the day. Cameron then bought longshot Toratic home at 50/1 downing the odds-on pot Woodlands Boy and Rule Number Three in the C3 Pace. Members of the Menai Probus Club were on course enjoying one of their regular outings at the Paceway and were on hand to present part owner Ron Lloyd the trophy when the lightly raced Holmes Hanover pacer Danron Boy scored his first win in the RO Pace, downing favorite Wandin North and Diamond Creek. John Street North mare Wandin North was having her first start back in a year and looks one to follow in upcoming engagements. Badgerys Creek driver Paul Sapio put the disappointment of an eight week suspension incurred earlier in the day behind him when he booted home the Kevin Pizzuto owned and trained filly Cosmic Beauty in the other 3yo event on the card. The last on the program saw durable pacer Basic Blue win yet another race at his home track when Mitchell Reese took the reins for local trainer Mick Watkins. After a farcical middle half run in just under 1.10, Basic Blue capitalised on a good passage from Reese to score the Caesar Blue Chip gelding’s 15th career win. Things are warming up ahead of the running of the Carnival Of Cups at the Paceway on September 30th where supporting races on the program carry the splendid prizemoney of $8000. With many events planned for the Patrons and personalities coming from afar, all roads lead to Bankstown Paceway. The Place To Be For Racing Excitement And Comfort. Bennett Answers Blake Leading reinsman Greg Bennett matched Blake Fitzpatrick`s treble last week at Bankstown Paceway with his own yesterday. Bennett started early on the program when he steered the Jack Primmer trained Six Of The Best to an impressive victory then backed up to take out the last two events on the card. After showing brilliant gate speed the John Tapp prepared Smooth Jag put a last 800m in 58.7 behind him to win easily and record his 12th lifetime success before Bennett brought Kiwi Fame with a well timed run to get up in the last. Trained by his father Jim at Woonona the Mystical Shark filly narrowly edged out the game Drummossie with Atlantic Mission a close up 3rd. Local trainer Ali Khouiss went to the lead in the Bankstown Premiership when his Camtastic gelding High Country nosed out the consistent Pandorama and Netherby Prince in the C1/C3 event, while Glen McElhinney increased his lead on the Drivers table when Winsome James took advantage of the race conditions to score in a swift 1.59.4 and record his 23rd career win. Another local with a grin on his face was John Beynon after his Stature- Abbe Glamour 2yo filly Tuscan Place bolted in at the juicy odds of 40/1. Tuscan Place has been doing a few things wrong in her races but showed her true ability with a 15m win in her first success. Racing returns to the Paceway this Thursday night with the Bankstown Council City Cup and strong support program so come along and enjoy harness racing at its best - at Bankstown Paceway - The Place to be for Racing Excitement and Comfort Bankstown - happy hunting ground for Blake, again. Leading freelance driver Blake Fitzpatrick took the honors on Monday at Bankstown Paceway with another treble to increase his lead on the NSW driver’s premiership. Fitzpatrick teamed with local trainer Ali Khouiss early in the day to score with Kiwi debutant Franco Enrico, leading throughout to narrowly defeat Babes A Flyin and the consistent Drummossie. The pair were at it again later when Sokys Atom gelding Glasscutters Atom showed his rivals a clean pair of heels to take out the Bankstown City Council Cup Prelude, ensuring favoritism for the August 24th final of $8000. Blake’s remaining winner was 2yo Dont Sell Me, a member of his father’s powerful Cawdor team, which also led all the way to record his first win. The local theme continued later when Fontenye in the hands of Glen Lobb for trainer Justin Tall caused a boil over against the CO pacers to score her second lifetime win at a healthy 25/1. Not to outdone, Condell Park mentor Mick Watkins produced durable pacer Basic Blue to salute the judge in the next and advance his earnings to just under $80,000 in downing Cee Ceeaus and Torikina Star. The fast class event saw the promising Motu Surprise Gift record some quick sectionals on the way to defeating a game Doug Bromac with Hanover Zip a distant 3rd. The Neil Day trained son of OK Bye was another to lead throughout for long time harness racing supporters Ron and Max Treuer to leave him just a few dollars shy of the $100,000 prizemoney tally. South Coast trainer Jack Primmer again made the trip from Dapto a worthwhile one when the Holmes Hanover 3yo Our Conspiracy Theory looked good in winning his 3rd lifetime race. While former local trainer Norm Warland, now based at Douglas Park, had a welcome change of luck when his Topnocher 4yo Bucks In The Bank did just that in defeating Pandorama and Village Fighter in the C1/C2 event. Racing returns to the Paceway again next week on Monday afternoon and also Thursday night where the Bankstown City Council Cup will be decided. Racing Returns to Bankstown Paceway with a bang. The Paceway hosted a strong 8 event card last Monday kicking off with the 2yo`s in the first where the Stature first starter Cardinal Rule led and romped in making the long trip worthwhile for Bathurst trainer Peter Trevor-Jones. In the first of the 3yo events the well bred Taralinger had 8 metres to spare over her rivals after burning over the last 800m in 58.7. The D M Dilinger- Spirit Of Tara filly recorded her 5th win of her career with 5 minor placings to date. In the other 3yo, Dapto trainer Jack Primmer tasted success with his Holmes Hanover gelding Our Conspiracy Theory NZ, when a narrow winner over a game Drummossie after that gelding worked hard early with the days fastest opening 400m. However Liverpool owner Ronny Lloyd had some consolation when the durable Y Me NZ was first out and first home in a later event, rating a solid 2.2.6 and closing in 59.4 in his 14th lifetime win. Leading USA import Live Or Die provided yet another winner when Live Action NZ prevailed in a blanket finish in race 6 over Precillarama and Pandarama in the first of a double for local trainer Ali Khouiss. Khouiss later produced the Trump Casino 4yo mare Sublime for an easy win in the last to take him within striking distance on the Trainers Premiership, while former local Glen McElhinney has a unassailable lead in the Drivers table over Ben Sarina and Greg Bennett. With seven more successive Monday afternoon meetings set down for the Paceway, along with Thursday night 24th August and the Bankstown City Cup, patrons are in for a feast of racing topped off with the Carnival Of Cups run on 30th September. On that night the minimum prizemoney will be $8000 for supporting events and $30,000 to be offered for the Group 3 Bankstown Trotting and Recreational Club Cup. The Bankstown track resurface proved to be a hit with all drivers waxing lyrical about it. Bankstown has turned things around in recent times and is fast becoming the first choice of many trainers to race their charges. Bankstown Harness Racing & Agricultural Society has completed renovations to the surface and bends at the Paceway. As evidenced by the photo’s taken 27/7/06 the grader was able to increase the positive camber of the bends by almost 2 degrees. This along with a fresh resurfacing and regular conditioning is in line with Australian Harness Racing Council’s recommendations of last year for clubs to present the best possible surface for racing and training. Few tracks in Australia can match Bankstown Paceway when it comes to horse numbers, and while down on the peak of 250 in training last decade, over 120 Standardbreds now call Condell Park home. Club President Les Bentley along with his Board of Directors and Track Sub- Committee members Martin Herbert, Gary Leonard and John Palmer remain committed to further improvements to the track and to continue to increase the banking on the bends as much as funds allow. With the upcoming Carnival of Cups being hosted on September 30th and record prizemoney being offered at the Paceway, Owners and Trainers are invited to a great night of racing here at Bankstown. Racing returned to Bankstown Paceway last Monday where the running of the Allied Express Championships were conducted. The first heat was taken out in decisive fashion by the Anthony Bertwistle trained and driven Woodlands Boy, from Rule Number Three and Broadway Guest. Punters did`nt miss the Ramsey Hanover 4yo backing him into a firm 10/9 favourite. Dapto pacer Mercury Vapour overcome a back line draw to narrowly score in the second heat and upset a good betting move on former Victorian Big Black Machine, with Hunter Valley trained Rinnibelles looking a little unlucky in third place. The last heat saw ex kiwi Trouble Rulz break through for his first australian win when leading all the way for an easy victory and assuring himself favouritism for the final held on the 24th april. With a third and last quarter put behind in 29.9 local driver Glen McElhinney had an armchair drive over the concluding stages ahead of Power Player and Heard It All Before. With a brand new Regal sulky on offer to the winner and a $4000 purse patrons should witness a keenly contested final at the Paceway. Long time sponser Colin McDowell provided an upset earlier on the day when arriving just in time to claim the 2yo event with his Chandon colt Step Back. Turned out in splendid fashion by Bungonia trainer Barry Thornton Step Back appreciated the hectic pace in the mid stages and prevailed in a close finish at the juicy odds of 50/1. Local trainers wer`nt finished with the winners circle however with Mick Watkins having a welcome change of luck when Basic Blue held off Y Me later on the card. As the only Metropolitan winner in the event and with earnings of $71,549 Basic Blue showed an appreciation of the conditions of the race and landed some healthy bets in what was his 13th lifetime win. Patrons will also enjoy some first class racing on the 24th when the time honoured Carousel Heats kick off at the Paceway. With further heats at Penrith and Harold Park the $20,000 final will be decided on May 26th. Happy punting and the Committee and staff look forward to your company soon at Bankstown Paceway. Paul Fitzpatrick adds another trophy! Leading trainer Paul Fitzpatrick added another trophy to his collection when Laguna Beach led throughout to take out the 2006 $10,000 Schweppes Cup at Bankstown Paceway last Monday. The Beach Towel 4yo rated 1.59.9 for the 2140m, a time rarely bettered on the 800m circuit, scoring by 4 metres from Mardi Gras and Waltango. Odds-on fav Franco Extreme made a mid race move and again moved up at the bell but was struggling a long way from home. Gavin Fitzpatrick only had to shake the reins over the concluding stages and Laguna Beach was not seriously threatened. Gavin`s brother Blake was not be outdone on the day however and picked up the last two races on the card, with Merrywood Prince proving too strong and hot fav Meadow Rainbow narrowly winning the last. Racing continues at the Paceway on April 10 with the Allied Couriers Championship heats for C0/C2 pacers, with the final of $4000 and new gig on offer. Doubles the flavour of the day at Bankstown! Last Monday`s meeting at Bankstown Paceway saw multiple double`s scored starting with Blake Fitzpatrick taking out the first two events with I Got The Look followed by Keira Street in the second. The next double went to Wayne Innes with Cobolt Beach recording his first win before backing up with longshot Princess Jessie in race five. Ebenezer trainer John Tapp then produced Karinya Explorer to salute in the first of his double, with smart mare Sheezamountaingirl his other winner. Leading trainer Neil Day was not to be outdone by taking out the last two events, Ollies Beach Towel proving too strong in a slick 2.01 mile rate before promising filly Goulburn Gal took her record to three wins from five starts in the last. Two stallions also sired doubles, John Street North continuing his good trot of late with Beach Towel doing his bit as well. Bankstown`s Paceways next meet see`s the running of the first round of heats for the time honoured Schweppes Cup, with a sparkling new gig on offer to all heat winners before contesting the $10,000 final run on March 27th. Pacers C2/C4 are eligible for this event. Also programed on the night are State Bred races for 2yo`s and 3yo`s, with a T1 and better mobile for the trotters. The Bankstown Harness Racing Club would like to thank the Bankstown Trotting Recreational Club for their sponsorship and support. Sadly Claude 'Ned' Feehely passed away in his sleep after an illness on Saturday 26th March, 2005. His funeral was on Friday 1st April, 10.30am at Rookwood Crematorium in the East Chapel. Vale friend. All our thoughts are with Jean and family. The comeback to grand circuit racing by Bathurst champion Smooth Satin was narrowly foiled by Camlach at Bankstown on Saturday night when it scored a last-stride win in the $100,000 MH Treuer Memorial. Having been retired in February after being diagnosed with scarred lungs, the Steve Turnbull-trained Smooth Satin was having his third run in as many weeks since returning to racing, and came from near last to have the Treuer in his keeping until it was snatched from his grasp by Camlach, which is trained and driven by Neil Day. Kiwi pacer Mister D G ran third, edging Cobbity Classic and Roman Gladiator out of the placings with the Brian Hancock-trained mare Sand Pebbles, the Miracle Mile runner-up to Sokyola, weakening over the latter stages of the 2540-metre Treuer to finish near last. Camlach completed a winning treble at Bankstown for Day with the respected Goulburn horseman earlier winning with Motu Surprise Gift and Cashel Lugh. Camlach had finished third to Cobbity Classic and Smooth Satin on Miracle Mile night in the Bohemia Crystal Free-For-All and the week before that was second to Flashing Red in a Miracle Mile lead-up sprint at Harold Park. Last year's Treuer Memorial winner, the Harry Martin-trained Double Identity, continued his lacklustre run of form when finishing down the track behind Camlach in the Treuer. |
