Treuer Memorial
At which point in Australian Harness Racing history do you start when trying to explain the tradition that is behind the Treuer Memorial? It could be before the turn of the last century. Maybe the 1960s can provide an insight and in more recent times perhaps the 1980s are the key to unlocking the magic of a race that celebrates the presence of champion horses and is duly won by such.
The finer points
People have been racing horses around tracks since before the Roman times. Even the Chariot races of 'Ben Hur's' day could have been forerunners to today's exciting and colourful harness racing events. Sulky races in Australia date back to the early 19th Century. The first harness racing club in Australia was founded in 1902.
